Moscow backs Red Cross call for ceasefires in Syria
Russia has called on both sides in Syria to agree to daily two-hour humanitarian ceasefires to allow for the evacuation of the wounded. With heavy fighting erupting in the Syrian capital Damscus as well as in cities across the country, Moscow has backed an initiative from the International Committee of the Red Cross. Russia has twice vetoed Western-backed UN Security Council resolutions on Syria prompting the president of the aid organisation to go to Moscow to try to persuade Russia’s foreign minister to reflect on the worsening situation. ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger explained his mission to Moscow: “ I had to make it clear that we not only wanted to do provide assistance, which very important for us, but also to carrying out protection activities. That means mainly protection of a medical mission, and it means access to detainees so that we can check conditions and treatment.” Over 16,500 Syrian refugees have fled to neighbouring Turkey filling the border camps near to capacity.
